I've thought about swapping lenses as well. Except I wanted to swap the lens and do nothing else. Then install LED bulbs.

I am happy with LED bulb replacements. I like th even glow from the reflector and dont like the discrete dots. That is the reason I like the last generation of TL brake lights, even lighting, but doesnt look like discrete LEDs.

I will do another set soon so ill post pics up how everything is made, the rear is covered in a rubber spray paint so the contacts dont oxidise... Ill try and make a couple of boards and post the pics up so you see how it is made, but if i make them like i made mine, top notch... only the materials come to 160bucks or more and then there id about 6hrs of work for one set to make it look and work perfect...

Im off to vacation see you in a week

Sorry to jack the thread though ya'll... I thought it would be a cool alternative, since we're on the subject
or you could vacuum mold your own lenses.

i would only buy led lights if the leds didnt have such noticeable hot spots. you can literally count every single lamp on that board... i think it looks dumb, and could be better built, and with more leds to evenly distribute the light. what i would do is get a whole bunch of tiny little leds, line them up right next to each other with minimal gap, and make like 5 horizontal strips in there, so it spreads it out.

It's weird that now nobody likes the boards because that IIRC is the same setup that countless people have done and others seemed to like them. Were the other boards different spacing or something?

That's what I thought... it's the same LED design as the previous group buy.

I only wish the circuity board extended into the light well where those smaller bulbs are (on the edges of the trunk). Maybe make it look something like this with a gap:

But the downside of smaller LEDs is that they wont be as bright. Those superflux LEDs get no smaller and are the brightness thats required. I have yet to see an OEM tail light from any manufacturer that has LEDs which don't "stick out" when they're lit up. I actually think it's kinda hot.

if someone could put LEDs in the reverse and the driving lights as well, that would look awesome. I think it just looks a little odd to have only one block of LEDs in your tail lights.

Once you finish with the fifth gens, make some for the 4ths. I'd buy em. i think with reverse and corner lights done it would look fantastic

Yeah, I never will understand why people who make LED tails just do a rectangle circuit board, instead of a parrallelogram shape, which would more closely follow the shape of that section of our taillight.

What pretty much everyone else said, countour to the shape of the tail light, make it for every part of the tail light and use slightly smaller led's with maybe 50% more of them. Three rows maybe?

Personally I'd like them the other way from everyone else. I'd like two rows of large leds (maybe a couple small leds inside a capsule) that are taillights at half brightness and brake lights at full. Agreed this should extend all the way across the taillamp assembly. I wouldn't want the reverses to match; maybe something like the bars from the 5-series for the reverse. I've been thinking front fogs with dual-row leds inside the JDM housing would be sweet (to match my concept for the rear). Got to keep it as a package Nice work so far, they look pretty good.
